Ella Henderson’s controversial exit from The X Factor on Sunday night proved far from popular with Twitter users, who took to the microblogging site to express their disbelief after the show.
The show saw the 16-year-old lose out to another favourite, James Arthur, in the sing-off, with the result decided by deadlock after the judges were unable to reach a unanimous decision.
Meanwhile both Rylan Clark and Christopher Maloney made it straight through to next weekend along with Union J and Jahmene Douglas.
However Twitter users were indignant, and wasted no time in making their feelings known.
“The X Factor is a complete fix. I expected Ella to win, not go home!,” tweeted one user, while another added, “Why did Ella and James have to be in the bottom two together?”
Another tweeter said, “xfactor is honestly a disgrace. couldn’t believe ella & james were in the bottom two!” while a fourth commented, “James and Ella should have been the final… This Is a joke.”
Celebrity Twitter users also appeared shocked by the result, with Philip Schofield saying, “Well!!!! That is an #xfactor catastrophe. Didn’t see that coming. Only consolation to Ella & James, you don’t have to win to be a star.”
Meanwhile, the odds on Christopher Maloney being crowned X Factor 2012 champion have been dramatically shortened following Ella’s departure.
The Liverpudlian singer – who along with Jahmene Douglas is the only act who has not yet been in the sing-off – is now 6-1 to win according to Ladbrokes, with Jahmene remaining the favourite behind James Arthur at 5-2.
Union J are 12-1 to be crowned champions while Rylan is the outsider at 25-1.
A spokesman for the bookmakers described Ella’s departure as “one of the biggest TV betting upsets of all time.”
