Brighton Rock
BBC2, 9:00pm

Richard Attenborough made the central role of teenage gangster Pinkie Brown his own in the classic 1947 version of Graham Greene's super novel set around the criminal underworld of postwar Brighton.
Here, fresh from his success as tragic Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis in Control, Sam Riley captures the young hoodlum's psychosis perfectly, and seems at home in this version of the story, which is effectively updated to the 1960s. The equally impressive Andrea Riseborough shines as Pinkie's girlfriend Rose, while Helen Mirren revels in her part as Ida the amateur detective on Pinkie's tail.
