True Dare Kiss

*True Dare Kiss screened in 2007*Generation X writer Douglas Coupland wrote a novel in 2001 called All Families Are Psychotic - and while he may have come up with that title for literary effect, you could make a good case that it's true of the family at the centre of True Dare Kiss. The six-part series comes from the pen of Debbie Horsfield (Cutting It, The Riff-Raff Element) and tells the tragicomic story of how four sisters are reunited for the first time in 20 years after their estranged father dies. At the heart of True Dare Kiss is one big secret - and a hundred smaller ones. Sisters Phil, Beth, Nita and Alice are played by Dervla Kirwan, Lorraine Ashbourne, Pooky Quesnel and Esther Hall in the kind of unsentimental, funny, raw way fans of Horsfield dramas have come to expect. But don't expect Cutting It, Part 2, even though it's also set in Manchester. Horsfield says:"True Dare Kiss is a very different animal to Cutting It. I actually loved writing Cutting It, which is why I ended up doing four series of it. But whereas the tone of it was glossy and aspirational, True Dare Kiss inhabits a darker world."[But] it is not a grim story, because there are moments of high comedy as well."True Dare Kiss is based on a series of plays Horsfield wrote in the 1980s. The Red Devils Trilogy was about four female friends and their shared love for Manchester United. She's adapted the plays to make the four friends sisters, but the Manchester United dynamic is still there."I have gone through various phases with supporting United... That's one of the things I wanted to write about in True Dare Kiss,"says Horsfield."You've got Beth, who is still basically a football holligan. She hasn't changed much since the Eighties, whereas her older sister, Nita, who runs a catering buisiness, is still a fan but she's become much more alert to the corporate hospitality aspect."The backbone of Nita's company I took from two of my sisters, who run their own business doing catering on building sites. The inspiration for the family house came from the house which I grew up in Manchester, which was haunted."Horsfield says she never encountered the ghost, but it certainly captured her imagination."We used to wonder what the story behind the ghost might be; was there a tragedy or a secret to do with the house? So that is where I took the inspiration for the idea of the house having a terrible secret."Sibling rivalry, dark family secrets, football hooliganism, sexual jealousy, even perhaps ghosts... True Dare Kiss promises quite a ride over its six episodes.VIDEO: CLICK here for interviews with the True Dare Kiss cast and sneak previews...
