Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) makes another action-packed comeback as the 24-part eighth 'day' of Fox's gritty US drama kicks off in what is its last season.

When we last saw Jack his future was hanging in the balance until daughter Kim (Elisha Cuthbert) came to his aid by donating stem cells in a life-saving operation. Now he's contemplating a quiet life with Kim and his granddaughter but his plans are rudely interrupted as, once again, the nation requires his services.

President Allison Taylor is on the verge of making history and negotiating a Middle East peace deal with visiting president of Kamistan, Omar Hassan. But US security forces have got wind of an attempt on his life, and the reactivated CTU, now based in New York City, has the job of tracking down the assassins.

New CTU boss Special Agent Brian Hastings (Mykelti Williamson) is joined by technical whiz Dana Walsh (Katee Sackhoff) and her fiance, Head of Field Operation Cole Ortiz (Freddie Prinze Jr). But Dana has a secret past which comes back to haunt her and causes problems at the organisation. Joining the team is CTU regular Chloe O'Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) and former FBI agent Renee Walker (Annie Wersching), who's offered a way back into the agency in return for her services.
