Jack watches the video he’s taken from Dana, which shows her discussing Hassan’s assassination with Pavel, and heads to Ricker’s place. Once there he calls journalist Meredith Reed, Hassan’s former lover, and informs her of the contents of the video. She agrees to meet with him at a downtown department store.

Meanwhile, at CTU, Eden tells Pillar that Jack’s call has been intercepted. Pillar informs Logan and Novakovich of developments and orders Pavel to the store to take Jack and Meredith out. At the store, Pavel lies hidden behind a vent and watches as Meredith and then Jack arrive. But, as he gets Jack in his sights, he feels the cold steel of Ricker’s gun at the back of his head. Other CTU and Russian agents try to bring Jack down but he evades them all and escapes with Meredith, joining Ricker and Pavel and heading for a deserted building. Jack had hoped his phone conversation would be intercepted – his aim was to draw Pavel out.

Meredith watches Dana’s video as Jack turns to the Russian, knowing full well that he is Renee’s killer. He wants to know who gave the order but Pavel won’t speak, so Jack resorts to torture. Some time later, a bloodied and semi-conscious Pavel still won’t talk, so Jack tries to get some information from the Russian’s phone - but Pavel has swallowed the sim card.

Undeterred, Jack cuts it from the assassin’s stomach! As Pavel dies, Jack inserts the card in the cell phone, hits redial… and gets the answer phone of former president Charles Logan. Jack has another target!
