The terrorist Samir is still alive and he's to be questioned at CTU, but one of the paramedics secretly injects him with a deadly poison. As the assassin, Pavel, leaves, he recognises Renee, and she seems to know him, too... Pavel calls the Russian foreign minister, Novakovich, and explains the situation, suggesting he take Renee out. The Russians are behind the whole terrorist plot!
President Taylor is about to call off the peace conference when Kamistan delegate Jamot approaches her with a suggestion. Soon, they've both convinced Dalia, Hassan's wife to take over as Kamistan president - the peace conference is back on!
Novakovich, however, is not happy and refuses to sign the treaty, so Taylor turns to a recovering Ethan Kanin for advice. He suggests using former president Charles Logan. He may be a criminal but he has influence with the Russians. Logan is happy to assist but won't explain his methods... and he wants full public recognition.
Meanwhile, presidential aide Tim Woods calls Chloe at CTU. Hastings is being relieved and he wants her to head the department! Her first challenge arrives quickly when Samir dies and a toxicology report shows he's been poisoned. Chloe calls Renee who tells her of the mysterious paramedic - perhaps someone from her time undercover with the Russian Mob.
Renee gets up to give Jack Chloe's message and is suddenly hit by a hail of bullets! Pavel has decided to finish her! Escaping the assassin's following shots, Jack rushes Renee to hospital, but it's no good - her wounds are too serious and Renee dies on the operating table, leaving Jack distraught with rage and grief...
