A quick chat with CSI: Miami’s David Caruso
CSI: Miami star David Caruso reveals what’s in store in the new series...

CSI: Miami has racked up more than 160 episodes since its debut in 2002. What do you think is the secret of its success?
“It’s all down to respecting the show’s fans. There is a real bond between the actors and the viewers. Our fans will stick with us as long as we treat them well. If people are going to take the time to tune in, you have a responsibility to take it seriously. For the cast, there’s still a sense of wonder in what we’re doing. Just when you think you are tired and you have run out of fresh ideas you find a new reservoir of energy.”

The first episode of the new series is a case in point, isn’t it?
“The opening episode goes back in time to when Delko worked as a salvage truck driver and the occasion he first met Horatio after he found a body in a car he had hauled out of a swamp. The CSI team didn’t exist then. We see Horatio as a homicide detective who is trying to convince his bosses that science can be harnessed to solve crimes. He has these budding instincts about the importance of forensics and wants to be at the forefront of crime-solving.”

How did they make all the characters look a dozen years younger?
“We employed the special effects team behind the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. We didn’t have to wear prosthetics, but they put beautiful filters on the cameras and created a really soft light so everyone looked lovely. Then they went away and enhanced the film on computer. It is amazing what can be done these days.”

We hear there’s a pretty spectacular episode coming up in which Natalia (Eva La Rue) is seriously injured when a booby-trapped meth lab blows up
“That’s right. One of the things we do well on CSI: Miami is the big production values. Detonating buildings and blowing things up can be dangerous stuff, but it’s great fun.”

Earlier this year, the three CSI shows crossed over as Vegas’s Ray Langston, played by Laurence Fishburne, visited Miami and New York in the course of investigating a human trafficking case. Would you like to do more episodes like that?
“Definitely. It was like a new investigative team came together in the crossover and it almost became like another show. At one point, Langston said to Horatio, 'Come with me', and I would have liked to have gone on the road with him to Vegas. Perhaps it will happen one day.”
