When the state attorney is murdered in a drive-by shooting during a press conference at a suburban drug bust, Horatio Caine’s team discover the drug squad had been receiving a series of tip-offs from an unknown caller. These had targeted the operations of the notorious Mala Noche gang, which has now taken its revenge.
The shooter had been killed in the attack, though the driver had sped off, leaving a pair of smashed glasses behind. These lead Ryan and Calleigh to gang member Felix Medina who’s quickly brought in. Medina happily gives information to his public defender and asks her to inform Horatio but she’s brutally murdered outside the courthouse.
The killer is soon revealed as Memmo Fierro, former head of the gang and murderer of Horatio’s wife! Now Medina clams up; he doesn’t want to go the same way as his lawyer.
Then, a new call comes in, and it sounds like a child’s voice. New gang leader Armando Salazar is planning an attack on a bus station. Posing as a tour guide, Ryan extracts Salazar from a bus queue but he and his two accomplices make a run for it, only to be mown down by gunfire. Eric sees Memmo in the distance but the killer quickly disappears.
Back at the lab, Eric and Natalia discover that the tip-off caller is actually Medina’s son, Miguel. Memmo is holding him captive and has been forcing Medina to betray Salazar by making the calls. With Salazar dead he now has his gang back.
The call is traced to a Miami hotel and, after a gunfight, Miguel is rescued. With his son safe, Miguel is happy to help and sends a text to the gang claiming Salazar is still alive and on a yacht out in the bay. Memmo heads there alone to finish Salazar but Horatio is waiting for him and quickly arrests him.
