Patty Hewes (Close) is fresh from her unprecedented victory over the crooked billionaire Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson). She faces a new legal challenge when a man from her mysterious past makes a sudden reappearance.

Daniel Purcell (Hurt) is a brilliant scientist under threat from a corrupt energy company. They are desperate to destroy his reputation before he can act as a whisteblower on their shady dealings.

What at first seems a straightforward domestic murder case soon turns into a mass conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of the US government. Only Patty is powerful enough to protect Daniel, but complicated issues from their shared past could cost them the case and maybe even their lives.

Tate Donovan returns as Tom Shaynes, Patty's partner at Hewes & Associates and her most-trusted advisor. He has been loyal to Patty for over a decade, but finds that his power is incompatible with his ethics.

Meanwhile, Patty’s protege Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) faces an impossible task. She has been recruited by the FBI to work undercover within Hewes & Associates and help them to gather evidence for a criminal investigation. Grief stricken by the murder of her fiance, Ellen must unpick the mystery surrounding Daniel and she must operate under the cunning gaze of her mentor and foe.
