I agree, it wasn't funny

Patty begins to suspect Ellen's motive for returning to Hewes & Associates when Uncle Pete (Tom Aldredge) looks into the ill-fated infant mortality case and unearths a photo of the lead plaintiff that reveals Monique Bryant to be a very different woman from the one who tried to compromise Tom.
Ellen isn't the only one causing Patty sleepless nights, however. Walter Kendrick's announcement that UNR is planning a corporate merger sees her more determined than ever to pursue the CEO in the courts and she gets jet-setter husband Phil (Michael Nouri) to scrutinise UNR's financial proposition. Phil's analysis – and that of his blonde mistress – reveals UNR is knowingly paying over the odds, but after a visit from one of Kendrick's associates, he warns his wife to give UNR a wide berth. Like she'll listen.
The FBI are also busy. First, they have to improvise when Ellen, concerned that Patty's onto her, changes tack. Then they're given the nod to start digging into Patty's past, forcing Uncle Pete to tie up some loose ends from the night of Ellen's attempted murder. Ellen's attacker, it transpires, is in rude health.
Wes, meanwhile, is clearly up to even less good than we thought. Under the cloak of friendship, he's put a tail on Ellen and isn't shy about sharing incriminating photos of her FBI 'friends' with a homicidal cop…
