Dexter's relief at finally dispatching the Trinity Killer turned to horror and sorrow when he arrived home to discover wife Rita had been murdered by Trinity in front of their baby son Harrison.
Detective Joey Quinn was suspicious that Rita's death didn't fit Trinity's modus operandi, and his interest increased when Masuka told him Dexter had punched out his neighbour Elliott after he kissed Rita, but Quinn's boss Lieutenant LaGuerta informed the team that the case was now in the hands of the FBI.
Quinn helped an emotional Deb to scrub the blood from Dexter's house and the pair ended up having sex, though Deb brushed it off afterwards and pretended it didn't happen.
When Rita's children, Astor and Cody, returned from a trip to Disneyland with their grandparents, Dexter broke the news to them about their mother's death. Astor stormed from the room, yelling at Dexter that it was his job to protect her mother.
Dexter was wracked by guilt, blaming himself for Rita's death. After setting fire to his storage unit, he headed out to sea on his boat. 'I've disappeared so many people. My turn now, to disappear myself.'
While stopping off to refuel, he got into an altercation with a stranger, and ended up bludgeoning him to death. Harry appeared at his side and told him to go back for Rita's funeral and to look after Harrison, which Dexter did, delivering a moving eulogy over his dead wife's grave.
