Following Rita’s murder, Dexter brought Cody and Astor to live in his apartment, but they weren’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of living in such a cramped space. Dexter hired a removals van to help move the family's belongings, but noticed a human blood stain in the vehicle. After running a test, he discovered it was human blood.
Investigating further, Dexter learned that the last person to hire the van was Boyd Fowler, who worked for the sanitation department, and Dexter decided to track his movements to find out more.
Dexter was questioned by the FBI over Rita's murder. They happily accepted his version of events, but Quinn remained suspicious. Deb was called to a crime scene where she was met by the gruesome sight of a severed head with the eyes and tongue sliced out.
Dexter spent a day stalking Fowler, letting himself into his house where he discovered a loaded gun. When Fowler returned home, Dexter heard him listening to motivational tapes and also came across a lock of human hair that had been numbered. Following Fowler to a remote marshland, Dexter saw him dump a barrel from his van into the swamp.
Batista discovered that LaGuerta had a significant sum of money in her bank account and wondered why she didn't tell him about it. Later, while he was drinking at a bar, a fellow police officer questioned her virtue and Batista punched him out.
After deciding it was best for Cody and Astor to live with their grandparents, Dexter returned to the swamp and opened one of several barrels dumped by Fowler. Inside was a woman’s dead body, and Dexter realised he had another serial killer on his hands.
