House A quick chat with House star Lisa Edelstein
Mar 4, 2010

House returns to Sky1 after its mid-series break on Sunday, 7 March and finds the irascible Dr Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) in surprisingly romantic mood when he and Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) compete for the attentions of an attractive new neighbour.
What will House’s boss, the on-off object of his affection, Dr Lisa Cuddy, make of that? Lisa Edelstein, who plays the hospital administrator, tells us more about the pair’s combative and flirtatious relationship…
What’s the attraction between Cuddy and House?
"His brilliance is definitely part of it. She’s a major over-achiever herself, so there are very few men that pique her interest. House is incredibly intelligent and that’s fascinating to a woman like Cuddy. Plus, he’s funny and he challenges her, which she needs."
Where do you see their relationship going?
"I don’t think these two people will ever be happy together, but I do think there’s more to come. We’re not done exploring that relationship."
What’s it like working with Hugh Laurie?
"He’s hilarious. We have such a good time. We have a really nice rapport."
We hear he’s going to be directing an upcoming episode
"Yes, I can’t say much, other than it’s episode 17 and David Strathairn, who was in The Spiderwick Chronicles, guest stars in it. I think Hugh had a lot of fun getting behind the camera and being creative in a different way."
What was it like being told what to do by him?
"I loved it. Hugh takes this character and adds so much to it, so to be directed by somebody who has that quick-moving brain is very exciting. I felt like he found more in my own performance."
And you also have your own episode coming up, don’t you?
"Yes, it’s an episode called 5 to 9. It follows a day in the life of Cuddy, and shows what it means to be a working mother who runs a hospital. You get to see House’s antics from her point of view, and all the daily traumas that the hospital system goes through."
What was it like filming that episode?
"Hard work. I’ve never been in every scene before. They also let me participate in the script a little more. I got to talk about the character arc and relationship stuff. They were things that I hadn’t been able to do before this. It was just great to be given the opportunity by my bosses and to shine as best as I could."
