Across the Sea

A pregnant woman washes up on the shore of the island and is rescued by an older woman. The pregnant woman goes into labour and has twins, before the older woman kills her…

The twins grow up to be Jacob and his brother, the Man in Black. They're unaware that anything exists off the island until they come across a group of other people who are stranded there…

The older woman takes Jacob and his brother to a cave on the island that gives off a golden glow. She tells the boys that this is the very essence of life, and that if anyone goes into the cave to steal it, the light of life will go off for all of humanity. They must guard it.

The Man in Black is visited by his real mother who persuades to desert the woman who raised him and join the other people. Jacob refuses to go with him.

Thirty years later, and the Man in Black is assembling the donkey wheel that will harness the island's essence and get him off the island. The older woman is furious and stops him, so he kills her.

In revenge, Jacob throws his brother into the golden cave - unleashing the Smoke Monster on the island. Jacob takes the bodies of his brother and the woman who raised him to a cave, where they were found centuries later by Jack and Kate in the show's first series.
