What They Died For

On the island, Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sawyer finally meet Jacob. He explains that he is responsible for unleashing the Smoke Monster and that it's vital that someone stops the Man in Black from ever finding the source of the island.

Jack volunteers to be the person who will take over guardianship of the island and Jacob performs a ritual to give Jack the gifts he needs.

In the Dharma village, Ben, Miles and Richard are captured by Widmore and Zoe. Miles flees when Locke arrives, and Ben gives Widmore and Zoe up to Locke. Widmore is forced to tell Locke that Desmond is the island's fail safe, before Ben shoots him dead.

Locke then takes Ben to the well where Desmond was trapped in order to kill him. However, Desmond has escaped.

In the alternate world, Desmond gives Ben a glimpse of his island life before giving himself up to the police. Being transported to prison with Sayid and Kate, Desmond is sprung by Ana Lucia and Hurley.

Desmond has arranged for all the Losties to be at Jack's son's concert that evening…
