After being knocked unconscious by Dean, Sam wakes up and is examined by Castiel, who determines that his soul is still locked in the cage with Lucifer. Thinking who would have wanted to bring him back from the dead, Sam heads to his grandfather Samuel’s compound to demand some answers, but Samuel doesn’t know anything.
The brothers then learn that Samuel has the location of the Alpha vampire and decide to join him on the search with a group of hunters (including Gwen and Christian). During the attack on the vampire nest, Dean spies Samuel and Sam putting one of the vampires in a van. When he confronts Sam, Dean learns that Samuel has been capturing and torturing monsters, but Sam doesn’t know what for.
Tracking Samuel and Christian to a warehouse, Sam and Dean discover the Alpha vampire locked in a cell, and learn that he has been creating vampires for a coming war. Samuel arrives and takes the boys captive. When they try to escape, Gwen recaptures them. The Alpha then manages to break out of his cell, but not before a possessed Christian injects him with dead man’s blood and teleports him away.
Crowley reveals himself and boasts that Samuel has been working for him in a bid to find the location of Purgatory. As the King of Hell, he also has the power to restore Sam's soul, but only if the brothers continue to bring him monsters. An angry Sam wants to kill Samuel for his double-cross, but Dean stops him and tells his grandfather to leave - forever. The episode ends with the boys agreeing to play along with Crowley.
