Lisbon’s team are called to the scene when retired football star Doc Dugan appears to have been killed by a car bomb outside his bar. When Jane goes hunting for the deceased’s championship ring, however, he finds Doc safe and well at his home. The dead man is the star’s assistant, Jake, who was helping his boss avoid a subpoena from his ex-wife, Anna. Doc was definitely the target, so Jane convinces Lisbon to let the world believe the sports star is really dead in an attempt to expose the killer.
Jane questions Doc’s manager, Steve Penn, and agent, Alex Sodko, who saw someone running from the explosion and who believe the star’s girlfriend, Marie, is the killer. But an interview with her soon convinces Jane she’s innocent. Another suspect is Megafan8, an Internet fan, who seems to have it in for Doc. But how will Jane draw this vindictive suspect into the open?
