Little Red Book

Director Bertram reinstates Jane as a CBI consultant – he needs him because of his crime-solving record – but Lisbon isn’t so lucky. She’s been put on indefinite suspension and her agents reassigned. Jane is to join a team led by by-the-book agent Gerald Haffner, and he’s not happy. Their first assignment is the murder of gym trainer Marcus Kuzmenko and Jane immediately realises the victim had had affairs with several of his clients, plus gym owner Joselyn Chapin.

Back at the office, Haffner has realised he needs someone to monitor Jane and recruits Cho to spy on him. But Jane has already started dismantling Haffner’s team by setting them against each other. One member is eventually suspended and Van Pelt is brought in to replace him.

Then Jane convinces his new boss that Kuzmenko was blackmailing one of his clients, perhaps a wealthy politician’s wife, and plants a fake contacts book at the victim’s home. He then tells Cho to inform Haffner about it and he seems to swallow the story hook, line and sinker. Jane then takes Lisbon to the gym to catch the real killer. He tells the gym they’re on their way, hoping the killer will hide the murder weapon and, sure enough, finds a bloody gym weight in owner Jocelyn’s car boot. Kuzmenko was planning to open a rival gym and Jocelyn was afraid he’d put her out of business.

Haffner’s false information had prompted Bertram to warn senior politicians and he now looks like an ass, so Haffner loses his team. And with further pressure from Jane, Lisbon is reinstated.

Meanwhile, Jane is sure Timothy Carpenter, the man he killed, was not Red John, but still needs confirmation. He brings in Rosalind Harker, the blind woman who’d lived with the serial killer, to identify the body. Her verdict: it’s not Red John…
