US network ABC says Ugly Betty will be cancelled after its current, fourth series.
Ugly Betty, which screens on Channel 4 and E4 in the UK, had been hit by falling ratings in the United States and had been moved to a Friday night slot.
Cast and crew were informed on Wednesday, although they still have four episodes of the onetime 'it' show to produce.
The show centred around the glamorous Manhattan fashion magazine Mode drew up to 5.5 million viewers at its peak in Britain, according to the Daily Mail.
Silvio Horta, expecutive producer of the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series said: "We've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty's final season and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion."
British fans of star America Ferrara and Ugly Betty can look forward to the final series screening later this year.
