Atlantis is a new 13-part family fantasy drama which reimagines ancient Greek myths and legends for a new generation Created by the team behind Merlin and BAFTA award-winning series Misfits, the big budget drama boasts the most ambitious special effects seen on British TV. Set in a time of legendary heroes, mythical creatures and gods, the series sees Jason, played by newcomer Jack Donelly, embark on an adventure through time on a quest to find his father in the ancient lost city of Atlantis. The first day on set was nerve-wracking for Jack:“I’d wanted it for so long and then suddenly you get there and wonder if you can really do this. “My first scenes were underground fighting the Minotaur so, as it was CGI, I didn’t have much to go on and the director was chasing me around caves with a green stick!” Danger is never far away for the fantasy adventure’s hero, who is joined by geeky Pythagoras (Robert Emms), and a flabby Hercules (Mark Addy). It’s not the Hercules that people would immediately think of. But Mark said he was ‘blown away’ by the script: “It’s incredible – if you got a movie script that was as good you’d be very happy!” The series was shot in the contrasting environments and temperatures of Morocco and Wales. Mark added:“When you’re out in the desert and its 103degF and you’re in your leathers there’s really nowhere to escape from the sun. Just when you think it can’t get any hotter and the director says,’Right, get on the horses now…!” As Atlantis progress, this unlikely trio will take us on a journey through the vast store of Greek myths and legends. They brush shoulders with Medusa, come face to face with the Labyrinth and even do battle with the dead. The series co-stars Sarah Parish, Juliet Stevenson and Jemima Rooper.
