The first show of the new series of Britain’s Got Talent has beaten the Doctor Who special Planet Of The Dead in the ratings, according to estimates.

Overnight figures suggest that the Ant and Dec fronted show was Saturday’s highest rated show, pulling in 11.4m viewers compared to 8.7m who tuned in to Doctor Who.

It’s an increase on the 2008 series of Britain’s Got Talent, when around 9.4m people tuned in to the opening show.

Among the acts featured on the first edition, which screened highlights from auditions across the country, were strongman Manjit Singh who exploded a hot water bottle on stage, Scottish singer Susan Boyle, family singing act Good Evans and highly praised dance troupe Flawless.

The Doctor Who episode, one of four specials set to screen over the next year before new Doctor Matt Smith takes over from David Tennant, also starred ex-EastEnder Michelle Ryan.

It also featured funnyman Lee Evans as a scientist who helped the Doctor close a “worm hole” – a gateway between earth and another planet.
