Filming has just finished on the fourth series of Call the Midwife – due to premiere in January – and the BBC has already commissioned a fifth series of the Sunday night drama.
The BBC also announced that a Christmas special will follow the fourth series in 2015, before series five premieres soon after in 2016.
The ever-popular period drama has been watched by an average audience of 10 million since it first screened in 2012. The premiere for series three was watched by 11.4 million.
According to BBC drama commissioner Ben Stephenson, series four sees Heidi Thomas’s writing “[meeting] new heights”.
Fans of Call the Midwife can expect to see some new faces joining the nursing team in 2015, including Linda Bassett (Lark Rise to Candleford) and Charlotte Ritchie (Fresh Meat). Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave will also be making an appearance during the Christmas special.
