There have been some great Casualty and Holby City crossovers for fans recently – and there’s more to come, when Holby’s Connie Beauchamp moves to Casualty.

In Saturday’s Casualty hospital CEO Guy Self (John Michie) turned up to discipline Dr Martin Ashford (Strictly’s Patrick Robinson). Meanwhile, Zoe continued to request a new consultant for the emergency department, not realising she’s opening a box of trouble for herself.

It’s all leading towards the ultimate crossover when long-standing Holby City character Connie Beauchamp (played by Amanda Mealing from 2004 to 2010) makes her dramatic return to Holby hospital.

Chatting to What’s on TV about her forthcoming role, Amanda Mealing reveals where Connie’s been, and why she’s back…

“Connie left Holby to work in private medicine in Switzerland because she was frustrated by lack of funds and having to fight for a plaster and a scalpel. But having money thrown at her she realised the fight is part of the fun  – and the biggest fight at the NHS at the moment is the struggling emergency department.”

Connie’s return spells trouble for current clinical lead Zoe Hanna, and viewers can expect to see sparks fly when Connie turns up on her wards on Saturday.

“Because Connie’s not clinical lead when she walks in, she’s a bit of a minx. The responsibility is on Zoe’s shoulders. While the department is Connie’s playground.”

Amanda goes on to acknowledge the serious real life problems facing the NHS, revealing they’ll be reflected in Casualty.

“There’s a responsibility [on Casualty] to highlight these problems. The emergency department is really struggling. It’s a real issue, which we can highlight, on primetime TV. You never know, maybe Connie’s ideas will be repeated in the real world!”
