The new series of Celebrity Big Brother was a hit with viewers on Friday, with more than 5.5m people tuning in to watch.
At its peak the show – which saw 11 famous faces going into the house – drew around 5.9m viewers, putting it ahead of BBC One’s Morecambe And Wise: The Show What Paul Merton Did, and Midsomer Murders on ITV1.
However, it was still down on the 7.3m who watched the launch of the last series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2007.
Among those taking part this year are Austin Powers actor Verne Troyer, TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson, singer Latoya Jackson, former Sugababe Mutya Buena and glamour model Lucy Pinder.
Meanwhile, TV presenter Terry Christian has been appointed head of the celebrity household in a new twist to the show.
The title was awarded to the last housemate to be left without a bed, since there were only ten in the main bedroom – and Christian was the lucky recipient after allowing the others to sort out their sleeping arrangements first.
As a result he will live in the lap of luxury in a separate area of the house, with the other housemates waiting on him.
He will also be immune from next week’s eviction and will be the only housemate allowed to nominate.
The first eviction is set to take place next Friday.
