Ron Atkinson given formal warning over Celeb Big Bro comment

Ron Atkinson has been given a formal warning from Celebrity Big Brother after making an offensive remark during a conversation with Danielle Marr.

The former football pundit was hauled into the Diary Room after an incident in the garden in which Danielle put her jumper over her head, resembling an Islamic-style headscarf.

He then quipped: “You’re not carrying a bomb wearing that towel on your head are you?” which was enough to prompt the reprimand from producers.

“Because you linked the fact that Danielle was wearing a hard scarf with the fact that she could be carrying a bomb, this could be seen as offensive.  Do you understand why?” he was asked.

Ron shamefacedly admitted he did, adding that the comment was a ‘complete oversight’.

“I apologise profusely if I did cause offence, I didn’t think I did, but if I did I’m sorry about that.

He added: “I came in determined not to upset anybody. One of my prime tasks was to make sure I didn’t upset, so I’m very aware of what I am saying.”

Ron’s warning comes hot on the heels of a formal warning given to Carol McGiffin over the weekend.

The Loose Women presenter landed in trouble after explaining to Louie Spence why Ron’s commentating career had ended – using the same racist term he was caught using at the time to illustrate what happened.

Ron and Danielle are both nominated for the first eviction of the series, which will take place on Wednesday night.
