Fans have had to wait a little longer than usual this year as the Doctor Who special that typically airs on Christmas Day will be shown instead on New Year's Day.

However, the wait will be worth it if the new teaser is anything to go by.

The BBC’s latest trailer has possibly revealed the identity of the villain the 13th Doctor must face, and we simply can’t wait another week if the rumours are true.

In the short clip, a terrified Jodie Whittaker finds “the DNA of the most dangerous creature in the universe” before hearing the well-known “EXTERMINATE”, which can only mean one thing – Daleks!

Needless to say, fans have been delighted that the aliens will star in the New Year’s special.

Shortly after the BBC shared the trailer on social media, viewers were quick to express their excitement, with one gushing: ‘’I can’t wait for next week!!!!’

Another commented: ‘BBC I LOVE YOU THANK YOU,’ while a third added: ‘’I think this is what Jodie’s series needed! I know the Daleks are a little overused…but the stories are generally very entertaining, they could potentially have a new look and I can’t wait to see 13 interact with a Dalek! Bring it on.’

There has been speculation for some time whether the Daleks will be making an appearance again after show bosses stopped featuring the ‘overused’ monsters in recent years.

Although the new trailer all but confirms the return of everyone’s favourite cyborg, this may be the last time Daleks will appear in Doctor Who, as showrunner Chris Chibnall recently told RadioTimes.com that they will not feature in the forthcoming series.

Chris said: “There are no [Daleks]! I don’t know how many times I need to say it. There are no old monsters this series. OK?”

It’s certainly sad news for long-term fans, yet while Daleks may not be returning, Jodie Whittaker recently confirmed that she will be staying on as the Doctor for series 12, scheduled to air in 2020.
