The year’s biggest TV-inspired karaoke hit is available to download on Sunday March 8.
(Barry) Islands in the Stream – an unlikely collaboration between legendary crooner Sir Tom Jones and Bryn and Nessa from Gavin and Stacey – is going on sale for Comic Relief.
The charity single was inspired by a duet scene between Bryn (Rob Brydon) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) in the last Gavin and Stacey series, which quickly became one of the most downloaded comic clips on YouTube.
Originally a 1983 hit written by the Bee Gees, the single – which is available to download on Sunday March 8, and to buy as a CD from Monday March 9 – has now been re-released to tie in with a special Comic Relief sketch featuring Sir Tom.
The sketch takes place in Las Vegas, where Bryn and Nessa compete in the World Karaoke Championships – and bump into Sir Tom.
“I’m not gonna lie to you, it made my week working with Tom again,” Nessa told a Comic Relief spokesperson. “We go back a long way. Simple as. And as for Robin, he’s been begging me for years to be my backing singer. I’m only glad this single could make his dream come true. Tidy.”
Bryn added: “I had a whale of a time filming in the Nevada desert and I’ll tell you for why: I felt like I was in Brokeback Mountain!”
