Actress Debbie Rush told producers to do what they wanted with Anna
Actress Debbie Rush has opened up about her forthcoming departure from Coronation Street as Anna Windass, and said she told producers to “do what they want” with the character – even if it means killing her off.
It was announced in the Summer that the actress was quitting the soap, after nine years playing the put-upon mum.
“I talked about it for about two years before it was time to go,” Debbie revealed to TV Times. “The show has been very good to me and I have been really lucky – I’ve had great storylines, and feel highly respected by my colleagues and it’s scary to leave a lovely job. But for me, as an actress, I just want to be creative again somewhere else.
“When I said it was time to go, it was quite a while ago, so we kept it under wraps for a long time. I told the producers: ‘Do what you want with me.’”
Asked if that meant she was open to the idea of Anna being killed off, Debbie teases: “I wasn’t bothered either way.”
Anna, who is currently being framed by nemesis Pat Phelan for causing Seb Franklin’s accident, will be on screens until the end of January.
51 year old Debbie says she is “really excited” about leaving the ITV soap, but doesn’t have any new projects lined up just yet.
“I just want to work,” she said. “I’m a jobbing actress and that’s what I intend to continue doing.”
