Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride is to take a break from the show, according to reports.

The 60-year-old actress, who plays Deirdre Barlow, is expected to be absent from the ITV soap for around two months, reported the Daily Star.

“Anne Kirkbride requested a slightly extended period of leave from the show, a request the company was happy to grant,” a Corrie spokeswoman said, although they did not disclose the reasons for her leave.

Anne, who made her first appearance on Coronation Street in 1972, is expected to reprise her role in the new year.

Her request for time off comes after her co-star William Roache, who portrays her on-screen husband Ken, returned to Coronation Street in June, after being cleared of rape and indecent assault.
