Ben Price says it ‘wasn’t a great day’ when the cast of Coronation Street heard that major characters would be killed off in a 50th anniversary plotline.

The 38-year-old former Footballers’ Wives star – who plays Nick Tilsley on Coronation Street – was asked on Loose Women if the news of the tram crash had upset the cast.

He said: “It wasn’t a great day. You understand the show goes through progressions. I haven’t been there very long, so for other people it’s a real family, but I think a lot of people at one time can be very unbalancing.”

But Ben said the anniversary needed to be big marked with a big storyline such as the crash.

“I think it’s very, very exciting for the show and for the viewers you need that. It’s 50 years. It’s such a huge milestone there has to be a big event, I think.”

Ben joined Coronation Street in October 2009 and was first seen in the show in December. He is the third actor to play the character of Nick Tilsley.

The 50th anniversary episodes will screen in December.
