Charlie Lawson reveals he is returning as fearsome Jim McDonald

Will Jim cause trouble for Steve?

Coronation Street baddie Jim McDonald will get out of jail after being banged up for armed robbery and make an “explosive” return to Weatherfield later this year.

Charlie, who first played Jim in 1989 and last popped up as the hardman in 2014, told The Mirror that he’ll be heading back for a short spell in Corrie this year before making a more permanent sounding return next year.

“They wanted me back full time this year but I couldn’t do it as I’m doing Rebus on stage, and a thriller. I’m going to film a bit but then will be back again next year.”

Outgoing Corrie boss Kate Oates had earlier this year dropped a huge hint that the fireball and boozer would be returning, saying: “We are having a discussion about bringing someone back. It’s a very well-established character…a long-standing name.”

And Corrie has now confirmed that Jim will be making an “explosive” return.

During Jim’s last stint in the show he ran an illegal booze trade – something that almost killed alcoholic Peter Barlow.

One of Jim’s more memorable storylines happened in 2007 when he got into a fight with his ex wife Liz’s bridegroom Vernon Tomlin (Ian Reddington) at The Rovers, shouting that Vernon didn’t deserve Liz.

If Jim was hoping to stop the wedding, his temper had the opposite effect. Liz decided she wanted someone who would truly love and respect her, and that was Vernon.

Coronation Street continues on ITV.
