Coronation Street boss Phil Collinson has confirmed the forthcoming appearance of the late Vera Duckworth on the show – and insisted that her arrival is ‘in context’.

Actress Liz Dawn briefly reprised the role to tie in with the final scenes of Vera’s husband Jack (Bill Tarmey).

The Daily Star quotes Phil saying: “Vera doesn’t come back as a ghost. She doesn’t come floating in on a wire or anything like that. Her appearance is in context.

“It was amazing to see Liz back and was perfect that one of the last images of Jack alive is the two of them together.”

Bill is leaving Coronation Street after three decades.

The newspaper claims that his final episode will see cancer-stricken Jack die alone on his 74th birthday, in the same armchair where Vera passed away nearly three years ago.

Phil said: “It’s the sort of story that you actually should tell. It’s about a man facing up to death. That’s something we all have to do.”
