Coronation Street actress Kym Ryder had been named Tesco Magazine’s Celebrity Mum of the Year 2008.

Kym, who plays barmaid and single mum Michelle Connor in the soap, is a devoted mother off-screen to David, 12 and Emily, 10.

Kym, 31, said: “I’m shocked and thrilled to have won this award from Tesco Magazine. And I feel humbled to have won alongside such amazing mums, whose stories are truly incredible.

“I’ll be bringing lots of tissues to the awards ceremony as I know it will be a really emotional and inspiring day.”

Judges felt the former Hear’Say singer – who is married to ex-EastEnders star Jack Ryder – is a great role model to all working mums, balancing her family life, with starring in the soap and her charity work.

Kym is an ardent supporter of Diabetes UK, a spokesperson for Beatbullying, and also works with Destination Florida, a small charity which provides holidays for children who are terminally ill or have life-threatening illnesses.

Kym’s Coronation Street character Michelle is currently going through some emotional turmoil as she finds herself torn between her ‘son’ Ryan and her biological son Alex who were swapped at birth.
