Coronation Street stars will head up an annual gay parade this summer as part of the soap’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Weatherfield cast and crew will join a Coronation Street float leading more than 100 others through the centre of Manchester, where the soap is filmed, for the city’s Pride celebrations on August 28.
Jackie Crozier, festival director for the event, said: “Coronation Street is a Mancunian institution with a global following and we’re delighted they’re teaming up with Manchester Pride in this, their 50th anniversary year. Through characters like Sean Tully, Hayley Cropper, Todd Grimshaw and, most recently, Sophie Webster, they have helped to raise awareness of the issues facing the LGBT community to millions of loyal viewers.”
The soap’s executive producer, Kieran Roberts, said he was honoured that the show would be leading ‘the country’s most glamorous parade’.
The theme of this year’s Manchester Pride is ‘through the decades’, but soap bosses are keeping the theme of their float under wraps.
