Viewing figures exploded on Monday night as 13 million people watched the tram crash disaster strike at the heart of Coronation Street.

According to the MediaGuardian the dramatic episode attracted 12.902 million viewers and a 45.8 per cent share of the audience between 8.30pm and 9pm.

Soap fans have been gearing up for the tram crash for some time so it came as no surprise that BBC2 sitcom Miranda couldn’t compete with Coronation Street’s figures.

An earlier instalment of Coronation Street pulled in 11.632 million viewers between 7.30pm and 8pm, while the first every 1960 Coronation Street episode drew 6.764 million between 8pm and 8.30pm.
