Coronation Street star Georgia May Foote has revealed she was disappointed when she found out she was leaving the soap.
The 23-year-old, whose character Katy Armstrong will be written out of the ITV show after four years, likened the feeling to a romantic split.
“I was a bit gutted that leaving Corrie wasn’t my decision – it’s like a boyfriend dumping you first – but I’m really excited,” she told OK! magazine.
Georgia May, who made her screen debut on Coronation Street in July 2010 and has also starred in Grange Hill and This Is England, said the move has given her the impetus to pursue new challenges.
She added: “If anything, it’s given me that kick I needed to move on to other things.”
The actress also said she was pleasantly surprised to be nominated for sexiest female at the British Soap Awards, alongside co-star Michelle Keegan, EastEnders’ Jacqueline Jossa, and Hollyoaks actresses Jorgie Porter and Jennifer Metcalfe.
“I’m so flattered by my nomination, but I wouldn’t have put myself up for that award, so it’s a complete surprise,” she said.
Georgia’s exit was announced in April, and Coronation Street’s producer Stuart Blackburn assured fans that her character will not be killed off, leaving the door open for a future return.
“Georgia is a talented actress who has been a great asset to the show. The decision to write out the character of Katy Armstrong is based on storyline discussions and will be one of the consequences of the current drama involving the Windass/Armstrong clan,” he said.
“Katy will not be killed off and the door will be left open for a possible return. We wish Georgia every success with her future career,” he added.
