Coronation Street’s Brooke Vincent and Amy Kelly say their relationship is about to move to another level as they help Simon Barlow get over the death of his beloved Tina.

The fractious young lovers Sophie and Maddie have had it tough since they got together last year. Sophie’s mum Sally was deadset against their relationship and the pair finished up sleeping rough, while Maddie’s thieving hasn’t endeared her to the locals. But they’re heading for a period of calm.

Brooke told What’s on TV: “Since we’ve started it’s been up and down, up and down… I think they’re settling us down for a bit, which is really good. But you still see the background of [Maddie’s] life. You still see the problems she has to go through, for something that’s so normal for me to sit down and have a meal with my family, she can’t do that.”

Amy said that part of the girls’ new maturity involves a plot based around Simon’s bad reaction to the death of Tina.

She said: “That’s why it’s so interesting with Simon, because everything that’s going on is post Tina’s death, he’s really depressed with it. I think that’s why it’s so important to find that similar ground with him, because she’s used to the troubled background…”
