Coronation Street‘s Julie Hesmondhalgh has joked that she could never be in another show because her acting isn’t taken seriously.

Julie has played mild-mannered Hayley Cropper in the soap since 1998.

She admitted: “I’ve got a bit of an unfortunate thing in that I think I’m doing really serious acting and people think it’s funny.

“I realise I can never ever be in any other show because when I think I’m doing really sensitive things people are like, ‘Oh, that was funny!'”

Next week, viewers will see Hayley in a nerve-wracking scenario when twisted Tony Gordon, played by Gray O’Brien, holds her hostage during an armed siege at Underworld after breaking out of jail.

The dramatic episodes, which play out across the week in nightly 9pm slots, will see two characters lose their lives.
