Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd is up for Best  Actor at the British Soap Awards, but has jokingly urged the public to vote for his rival, EastEnders’ Steve McFadden.

Jack, who plays David Platt in the ITV soap, was in a humorous mood when he spoke to What’s on TV about the awards.

“My drunk acting is terrible, I just look knackered, I just look sleepy,” he said. “Someone was saying [Steve McFadden’s] been drunk for a year, like in every scene he’s just drunk… That must be hard, that must be very hard. So yeah he deserves to win it!”

If he did happen to lose out to Steve, who plays Phil Mitchell in EastEnders (which is no foregone conclusion), Jack has a variety of other opportunities of picking up a soap award following David Platt’s dramatic storylines centred around the murder of drug dealer Callum Logan.

He’s personally nominated in the Best Male Dramatic Performance category, while he was central to the Corrie nominations for Best Scene, Best Storyline and Best Single Episode categories.
