Coronation Street star David Neilson has revealed he has gone back to using his late mother’s shopping bag when playing Roy Cropper – because others just weren’t good enough.
The actor – whose eccentric alter ego always carries an old bag – lost his mother shortly before he joined Coronation Street in 1995 and decided to use her bag as a prop.
Although he has since used replicas bought by the wardrobe department, he said they failed to measure up to the original.
David said: “Wardrobe have bought a few and I had been using the new versions, but they’re no good. They disintegrate. So I’ve actually gone back to the original bag. That bag went round Loughborough Market for many years!”
He added: “It will be about 30 years old now. I’m not sentimental about it, but it is a good bag. I know the feel of it when I pick it up.”
The 60-year-old said the carrier even travelled on the plane with him to Romania when he filmed the soap’s spin-off DVD Romanian Holiday – which is on sale now.
