Coronation Street star Jennie McAlpine says she still worries about her future on the show – despite having clocked up nearly 17 years as fan favourite Fiz Stape.
Asked about whether she felt she was “bombproof”, Jennie, who joined the cast in April 2001, replied: “Bombproof? Me? The thing is we’re contracted year to year. I just met a new guy in the canteen who says he couldn’t believe I’d been here 17 years but that’s nothing compared to Bill Roache [Ken Barlow] who has done 58 years.
“I am a proper newcomer compared to that and I feel it. I know it sounds stupid but I do. I have been in it now for as long as Sally Dynevor [Sally Metcalfe] and Michael Le Vell [Kevin Webster] had been in it when I started. I don’t see myself as bombproof.”
And Jennie added she’s still loving the role: “You get the chance to do so many different things with one character – and I do feel that I get to do other stuff like the jungle and live my life.”
Next week, Fiz learns her long-term partner Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) has cheated on her with Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell). The actress has said she didn’t see this scenario coming for the couple.
“I can never think of the plots that she could have – our writers come up with such great storylines and characters […] I couldn’t have imagined this storyline,” she admitted.
