Joe McElderry has revealed he would like to appear on Coronation Street.

The former X Factor winner, who is a “massive fan” of the ITV soap and will perform in the Corrie musical Street Of Dreams on the Newcastle dates, admitted he would be up for a cameo.

“I think if I was to do that, I would like to appear as myself,” he said.

“I could be an aspiring singer maybe, trying to break out on the cobbles, I suppose!”

Joe – who will perform the closing number, Ghosts – Take My Hand alongside Paul O’Grady, Julie Goodyear, Kevin Kennedy and Kym Marsh – revealed his favourite characters are Mavis Wilton (played by Thelma Barlow) and Becky McDonald (portrayed by Katherine Kelly).

“I always liked Mavis when I was younger, and I did love Becky. Becky’s storyline was absolutely amazing,” he continued.

And the 20-year-old singer has praise for the show’s writers, despite the recent controversy over Frank Foster’s murder storyline.

“It’s incredible. The writers of the actual soap are very talented,” he said. “I did see the episode where Frank’s killer was revealed, it was all very clever how it all works.”

He added: “I used to watch it when I was younger at my grandma’s house. I don’t get to watch it as much now because I’m always working or I’m out at the time it’s on, but I always catch up on them on trains and planes.”

Joe will be a guest star during the Newcastle dates at the Metro Radio Arena on May 29 and 30.
