Katherine Kelly ‘loves’ her new high society role

Former Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly has revealed how delighted she is to be cast as a character who’s the complete opposite of Becky McDonald.

The 32-year-old actress – who made her name playing the brash barmaid – left Coronation Street earlier this year and has been cast alongside Entourage actor Jeremy Piven in the new ITV1 drama Mr Selfridge.

Jeremy will play Harry Gordon Selfridge, the flamboyant and visionary US entrepreneur known as the Earl of Oxford Street and Katherine will play his love interest, the alluring socialite Lady Mae.

Katherine said: “I love the fact that it’s based on the real thing and the part for me couldn’t be more opposite to Becky – she is absolutely the top of the social circle, Lady Mae.

“She is the one of all the women who hang around with Mr Selfridge, she is the only one in the pecking order that’s three steps above him and that’s just a thrill to play.”

She added: “All I know is Andrew Davies is an amazing writer, I adore the scripts, I think that Jeremy Piven is outstanding.

“He’s playing Mr Selfridge and for me I always look at the script and the part and for me the script is excellent, it’s based on a true story which I always like.”
