Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan admitted being shocked by her Best Newcomer win at the British Soap Awards on Saturday night.

Michelle, who plays David Platt’s girlfriend Tina McIntyre in the ITV1 soap, beat off stiff competition from EastEnders’ Stephen Lord (Jase Dyer) and Rita Simons (Roxy Mitchell), and Hollyoaks Nico Mirallegro (Newt).

Speaking after her win, Michelle said: “I’m shaking still. I thought I had no chance of winning so when I won it was a shock, definitely.”

When asked how she felt about her character being the new woman in David’s life, Michelle said: “A lot of people are scared of David – but I think David’s more scared of Tina.”

Michelle’s victory was one of five awards won by Coronation Street on the night.

Her co-star Jack P Shepherd picked up the gong for Best Villain, while Rob James Collier (Liam Connor) was named Sexiest Male for the second year running.

Maggie Jones (Blanche Hunt) won Best Comedy Performance, while Liz Dawn was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award for her role as Vera Duckworth.
