Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan has revealed that while she used to like her character Tina McIntyre, she’s not so sure now that she is having an affair.

Viewers have seen dramatic scenes unfold as the barmaid embarks on an illicit fling with married Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) ahead of her departure from the soap later this year.

And she admitted to the Sun on Sunday: “I thought Tina would never cheat.”

“When I read that storyline my first thought was ‘I don’t think Tina would do that, it goes against her morals’,” the actress explained.

“But I sat down with Stuart the producer, who explained the reasons behind it, and he said that Tina has had a hard life, her character has changed and she is desperate to be loved.

She added: “This made total sense to me because she is lonely and a bit broken, and has been so unlucky with men.

“I know Tina as well as the writers know her, and because I play her I know how she would feel inside.”

Michelle – who is engaged to TOWIE star Mark Wright – added that she was “racked with nerves” about Tina’s forthcoming exit from the show, which is set to spark a whodunnit as she is killed off.

“It’s a very sad end for her,” the 26-year-old admitted. “But when I was told about the storyline and which characters were involved, it was really exciting.

“It does feel very final, because I can never go back, but I think that is a good thing.

“I’m leaving Corrie and leaving Manchester, and it feels like the next chapter in my life both professionally and personally.”
