Coronation Street newcomer Rebecca Callard has revealed she did not tell her mum Beverley – who plays Liz McDonald – that she had auditioned.
Rebecca – who is playing Fiz’s prison inmate Ruth Walsh in the soap – said she did not want to say anything to Beverley as she did not want to worry her.
Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, she said, “I actually didn’t tell her about it until after I’d been for my audition.
“I didn’t want to say anything beforehand, because I think she would have been quite disappointed if I hadn’t got it, and I knew that I’d make myself more nervous knowing she was waiting at the end of the phone to find out how it went.”
Rebecca, whose character will make her screen debut on August 15, admitted it was probably good that Liz had left Weatherfield – as it would have been nerve-wracking for her to work with her mother.
“I would have been quite nervous if that had happened, I think – I probably would have stumbled over all my lines!” she said.
“And if we’d had any emotional scenes together, it would have been a real cry-off as both of us shed tears at the drop of a hat.”
However the actress added that she has looked to Beverley for advice about appearing in the soap.
“She’ll definitely be tuning in, and she also gave me lots of technical advice about how Coronation Street is filmed.”
