Samia Smith has vowed to never take her job on Coronation Street for granted.

The 28-year-old, who first set foot on the Weatherfield cobbles 11 years ago, has seen her character Maria Connor take on some challenging and high-profile storylines.

“I think it’s just all sorts of luck and circumstance that get you to where you are now. I suppose everything happens for a reason,” Samia said at the launch of the Home Heat Helpline’s winter campaign to help low-income households save money on energy bills.

“I don’t take it for granted at all. Fortunately I’m in a position where I don’t need to worry about my fuel bills, but never say never… if I wasn’t in Corrie I’d be a jobbing actress, struggling!”

The mum-of-one – who recently separated from her husband Matthew after five years of marriage – is currently filming a sex attack storyline for the soap.

“When I see dramas on the telly that I really enjoy watching I have a moment where I think, ‘Oh that could be nice’, but Corrie’s been brilliant and I can’t complain at all with the storylines I’ve been given,” she added.

“It’s every actor’s dream to be given challenging stories so I’m happy there.”
