After 12 weeks, 16 contestants, countless routines and even more scrapes, bumps and injuries, the final of Dancing On Ice 2011 is here. But would Sam Attwater, Laura Hamilton or Chloe Madeley be crowned series champion….?
Torvill and Dean opened the show with a rock-tinged, dramatic reworking of their classic Bolero, the routine which the top two contestants would later perform
The scene was then set for a fast-paced and entertaining night as the couples took to the rink
Sam kicked off the main part of the show with his ‘showcase’ routine – a lively performance to Footloose which won him the first 10s of the series
Laura Hamilton’s showcase routine was inspired by Madonna’s Express Yourself – but she had a disappointing reaction from the judges
Finally Chloe Madeley presented her showcase routine, to the Dirty Dancing classic (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life
Then it was time for the trio to reprise their favourite routine from the series. Sam started off performing Riverdance from the ’round the world’ week – and he did it even better the second time around
Laura then reprised her I’m So Excited routine – which gave her her
highest score of the series. Could she possibly improve upon it?
The routine was once again a fast-paced number which featured some complex spins and twists
Not only did Laura improve upon her previous performance, she scored the only full house of the entire series, with 10s from all the judges
The TV presenter and her partner Colin Ratushniak were clearly thrilled at the score
Jason Gardiner was so impressed by Laura’s performance he ‘took his hat off’ to her – revealing the results of his much-talked-about hair transplant
Chloe, meanwhile, bypassed her highest scoring routine of the series and opted instead to reprise her performance to Kiss Kiss from the ’round the world’ week. And this time she got a much higher score
The show also saw some of the previous contestants making a return to the ice. Steven Arnold – who dazzled us with his less-than-perfect skating – was as entertaining as before
Kerry Katona also made a return to the rink, reprising her No Business Like Showbusiness routine
Then it was time to see which two couples would go on to dance the Bolero and which of our trio would be finishing third
First through to the next stage to dance the Bolero were a thrilled Sam and Brianne
And Laura and Colin also found themselves going through to the final two
All of which meant that Chloe and Michael finished in third place – but they didn’t appear downhearted
She said afterwards that she had had an “incredible” time on the show and would be very jealous of next year’s participants
Sam was first to dance the Bolero, and ended the dramatic routine with his hand clutching Brianne’s chest – a move he claimed was entirely accidental
Laura’s Bolero was a more low-key affair but it still won praise from the judges
But who would the winner be? Would it be Sam – or Laura?
It’s Sam and Brianne! And the actor looked stunned to learn that he had won
Brianne was quick to congratulate her skating partner with a hug
The pair could not stop smiling as they were presented with their trophy
As the pair celebrated Sam hoisted Brianne – and the trophy on to his shoulders. And that’s that for another year – we’re already looking forward to the 2012 series….
