Dancing On Ice: Time’s up for ‘Comedy’ Dave!

‘Comedy’ Dave Vitty has become the latest celebrity to receive his marching orders from Dancing On Ice 2011, after losing out in Sunday’s skate-off.

The radio presenter – best known as Chris Moyles’ sidekick on his Radio 1 show – had so far avoided the bottom two in spite of failing to score highly with the judges.

However this Sunday his luck ran out when he and skating partner Frankie found themselves skating for survival against Kerry Katona and Dan Whiston – although the vote was not a unanimous one.

After both had reprised their routines on the theatre-themed show, the judges found themselves divided when Emma Bunton voted to save Kerry and Robin Cousins opted for Dave.

“I’ve found this very difficult, and I can’t quite believe I’m doing this,” Emma said, “but I have to go on performance and I’m saving Kerry.”

Robin said of his decision, “I am a skater and I’m saving the skater,” before choosing Dave, leaving Jason Gardiner with the casting vote.

And despite his harsh criticism of Kerry in recent weeks, he chose to save her. “I’m looking at performance,” he explained, “and based on the performances in the skate-off I’m saving Kerry.”

Dave, however, seemed resigned to his fate. “I’m gutted,” he said afterwards, “but I know I’m not one of the best skaters in this competition. I’ve had an amazing time, and thanks to everybody involved in the show for teaching me, especially Frankie.”

After last weekend’s show in which Jennifer Metcalfe was booted off in spite of receiving good scores from the judges, the public were spot on with this weekend’s result, since Kerry and Dave had also finished in the bottom two spots on the scoreboard.

Earlier in the show Dave had faced criticism for his performance to the Hair song Age Of Aquarius – which saw him dressed in a 60s-style hippie costume.

“Thank God for the hair and the costume,” Emma said of his get-up, “but there’s no performance in your face any more.”

Dave’s departure leaves eight celebrity skaters to compete for the series title. Favourites Sam Attwater, Laura Hamilton and Chloe Madeley all sailed through to next week, as did Jeff Brazier, Johnson Beharry and Vanilla Ice – who narrowly escaped elimination on last Sunday’s show.

Denise Welch was the last person to learn that she had won a place in next weekend’s line-up.
