Dancing on Ice‘s Jason Gardiner has said that he believes he is a better judge than Simon Cowell – because he can offer contestants technical advice.
The notoriously catty panellist told The Sun that the X Factor mogul did not have the first-hand experience to improve the performances of aspiring singers.
“Simon is a successful music mogul and definitely knows what the trends are and what’s marketable,” Jason said.
“But does he know how to say to a singer, ‘This is how you need to support your diaphragm, this is how you need to project your voice, you need to pull back here’?’
“Ultimately with a singing competition it comes down to the sound that you produce,” he added, “and yes it’s the whole package – are they marketable do they have the image? All that kind of stuff he absolutely knows what he’s talking about.
“But the difference is I’m critiquing people on how to perform and how to dance and I definitely know from my background and 20 years of experience how to impart technical criticism in order for them to improve.”
However he added that there were similarities between him and Cowell.
“I’ve been compared to him a lot,” the 39-year-old admitted. We are both seen as the toughest on the panel and we don’t sugar-coat anything.”
Jason also warned this year’s semi-finalists – Sam Attwater, Johnson Beharry, Laura Hamilton and Chloe Madeley – that the pressure was on ahead of this Sunday’s show.
“Unlike any other final in previous years, this one is so thrilling to me because we can be nit-picky about who is in the competition now because they are all so capable of being brilliant,” he said.
“It’s very neck-and-neck and what’s going to separate them now is slip-ups. The heat is on and the pressure is going to be immense.”
